Werner Rammer Visit to Luke to Enhance Biodiversity Modelling in SafeNet

From 26 May to 6 June, the SafeNet Project team was delighted to welcome Werner Rammer to Natural Resources Institute Finland / Luonnonvarakeskus (Luke) to collaborate on improving the iLand model for our case studies.

Together with Juha Honkaniemi, Katharina Albrich, Michael Pashkevich and Mikko Peltoniemi, the team focused on enhancing the deadwood submodel, which is essential for estimating deadwood as a biodiversity indicator supporting saproxylic species.

Thanks to Werner’s programming skills  (and perhaps a little inspiration from a seaside sauna at Villa Furuvik), the new ideas were implemented into iLand during the visit!

A joint paper is underway, and the updated model will be piloted in SafeNet’s case study and living lab in Evo, Finland. These improvements will also be integrated into the open source iLand model, supporting forest researchers globally.

The visit ended on a high note with a KingHannah concert on Werner’s final day.
