New Biodiversa+ Policy Briefs Support Nature Restoration Across Europe
As the implementation of the EU Nature Restoration Regulation moves forward, the Biodiversa+ partnership has published a series of eight policy briefs designed to help policymakers translate scientific knowledge on ecosystem restoration into practical action.
Drawing on a decade of European research and experience, the briefs provide guidance linked directly to the Nature Restoration Regulation and the development of National Restoration Plans across EU Member States. They cover both ecosystem-specific restoration actions and the wider conditions needed for restoration to succeed at scale.
Several of the briefs are particularly relevant to forests and biodiversity conservation. For example, Integrating the Biodiversity – Climate – Water Nexus into Forest Landscape Restoration explores how forest landscape restoration can support not only biodiversity, but also climate resilience, water regulation and freshwater ecosystems. Others focus on topics such as securing native seed supplies, improving biosecurity in plant nurseries, and ensuring adequate financing for restoration efforts.
The publication highlights an important message: successful restoration depends on more than setting targets. It requires strong scientific evidence, long-term monitoring, coordinated planning and collaboration across sectors.
