Work Package 7 is led by the Natural Resources Institute Finland and brings together knowledge from across the SafeNet project to support the protection of Europe’s primary, old-growth, and high conservation value forests.
The team is combining insights from biodiversity and carbon mapping, climate and land use scenarios, forest connectivity, and stakeholder engagement to create a comprehensive roadmap for conservation. This work will assess how current forest policies and management practices affect biodiversity and ecosystem health, and how they can be improved. It will also explore trade-offs and synergies between conservation, climate goals, and the use of forest resources.
By analysing real-world data and simulation results, the team will propose practical and effective strategies for protecting forests under future climate conditions. The final roadmap will offer guidance for decision-makers and stakeholders across Europe, helping to align forest conservation with broader environmental and societal goals.
