Work Package 5 is led by the Polytechnic University of Madrid and focuses on improving how forests across Europe are connected. This is important because connected forest landscapes help species move, adapt, and survive as climate and land use change. The team is identifying key migration routes and areas where forest connectivity is weak or may be blocked for some species. These findings will guide where conservation, restoration, or management actions are most needed to support biodiversity and make forest ecosystems more resilient.

The work also looks at how future climate and land use changes could affect forest connectivity and species movement. In addition, the team will explore assisted tree migration, which involves helping tree species move to areas where they are more likely to thrive in the future. This will support long-term gene conservation and help forests adapt to changing conditions.
