SafeNet’s research is grounded in real landscapes through regional case studies across four European forest ecosystems. These case studies include Living Labs, which are collaborative spaces where researchers work directly with local communities, forest managers, policymakers, industry and other stakeholders to test and shape practical strategies for conserving biodiversity and strengthening forest resilience.

By applying innovative monitoring and modelling approaches in diverse forest types, from Mediterranean woodlands to temperate mixed forests, the project partners ensure that the strategies developed are tailored, scalable, and rooted in real-world needs.

“SafeNet is not just about studying forests – it is about working with the people who rely on them to find solutions that balance conservation, climate adaptation, and sustainable use.”
– SafeNet co-ordinator Jukka Forsman,
Research Professor at the Natural Resources Institute Finland
SafeNet Living Labs

The graphic above offers a visual overview of stakeholder engagement activities in SafeNet. Interaction with local/regional level stakeholders in the four locally embedded Living Labs will focus on current forest management practices, barriers and enablers of resilient forests, as well as on future visions and promising conservation and management options. Interaction with European level stakeholders in the Policy Lab will focus on large scale scenarios and policy options, and will aim to co-create policy recommendations as a key output of SafeNet.
