About SafeNet

Funded by the EU Horizon Europe Programme, SafeNet is a €6.2 million, 4.5-year project that aims to stop biodiversity loss and boost ecosystem resilience in European forests, using advanced monitoring, modelling, and working with local communities to develop solutions that balance conservation with the use of natural resources.

Case Studies

“By combining cutting-edge science with hands-on collaboration, we can make a real impact and safeguard the future of Europe’s forests.”

– SafeNet coordinator Jukka Forsman,
Research Professor at the Natural Resources Institute Finland

The SafeNet consortium is led by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and comprises 14 partners with multi-disciplinary complementary expertise from across 11 countries (Finland, Hungary, Austria, Spain, Norway, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Romania, France and the United Kingdom).

Case Studies

SafeNet’s research is grounded in real landscapes through regional case studies across four European forest ecosystems. These case studies include Living Labs, which are collaborative spaces where researchers work directly with local communities, forest managers, policymakers, industry and other stakeholders to test and shape practical strategies for conserving biodiversity and strengthening forest resilience.

By applying innovative monitoring and modelling approaches in diverse forest types, from Mediterranean woodlands to temperate mixed forests, the project partners ensure that the strategies developed are tailored, scalable, and rooted in real-world needs.

Work Packages

SafeNet is organised into nine Work Packages, which are different areas of work that structure the project around specific themes and goals. Each Work Package focuses on a key part of the project’s mission, such as monitoring biodiversity in carbon-rich forests, modelling future scenarios under climate change and management practices, or co-creating conservation measures with local stakeholders. These areas of work also explore how forest ecosystems respond to climate pressures, how to maintain ecological connectivity across landscapes, and how conservation and protection strategies can be adapted to meet both environmental and social needs.

All Work Packages are closely connected and support one another, helping the project team collaborate effectively and deliver meaningful, science-based solutions for Europe’s forests.

Resources

This page provides access to SafeNet’s visual identity and promotional materials. Here you will find the project logo, branding assets, templates, and guidelines for using them correctly. These resources are here to help ensure consistent and accurate communication. Materials will be added over time.

Results

This is where SafeNet will share the outcomes of the project as they become available. From scientific publications and policy briefs to maps, reports, and other key outputs, this page will gather the knowledge and tools developed throughout the project. Keep an eye on this space as it will be regularly updated with new insights and resources.
