Deliverable 2.2 – Mapping European forest carbon distribution

The SafeNet deliverable D2.2 “Mapping European forest carbon distribution” provides a high‑resolution map of current forest carbon distribution across Europe. The report brings together harmonised datasets on above‑ and belowground biomass and soil properties to generate integrated carbon density maps for 2020 at 100 × 100 m resolution. It documents the workflow for combining NFI‑aligned biomass data, climate‑ and phylogeny‑specific carbon fractions, regression‑based belowground estimates, and soil organic carbon from HoliSoils and peat datasets. The analysis shows that European forests stored an estimated 37 Gt of carbon in 2020, with soils representing the largest pool. The maps offer a transparent baseline for identifying carbon‑rich forest ecosystems and supporting downstream modelling and assessments within SafeNet.
